Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC) connects the East Kootenay region to the rest of Canada and beyond. Serving Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Invermere, Golden, Radium Hot Springs, and surrounding communities, YXC supports both everyday travel and access to one of Canada’s most visited outdoor destinations.

As the region’s primary commercial airport, YXC plays a central role in tourism, business travel, and regional connectivity. It serves as a gateway to the Canadian Rockies for visitors and a critical link for the communities it serves.

A Growing Gateway

YXC has evolved alongside the region it serves.

Key Historical Milestones

  • Pre-1960s – Prior to the current airport, Cranbrook was served by a small downtown airfield
  • 1966 – Land was acquired to develop a new airport at the current location, establishing the foundation for today’s facility
  • Early 1970s – The original terminal building at the current location was completed
  • Early 2000s – By the early 2000s, the airport required expansion to support growing demand and better serve the region
  • 2006 – 2008 – A major redevelopment began, including:
    • Runway extension from 6,000 ft to 8,000 ft
    • Terminal expansion and modernization
    • Introduction of international arrivals (2007) and departures (2008)
    • Addition of a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) facility
  • 2008 – The expanded airport officially opened in October 2008

Since then, over $20 million has been invested in continued upgrades, supporting larger aircraft, expanded service, and an improved passenger experience.
